The Hand Patchwork is an appliqué artwork blanket, as part of our first publicly available artwork series. The artwork is made from the flags that flew as part of an installation at Coal Drops Yard in 2021, illustrated by artist Melissa Kitty Jarram. It is one of eight unique textile pieces available to purchase, raising essential funds for The Magpie Project.
Weathered and de-installed flags have been transformed into bases for this series of applique artwork blankets. Second hand windbreakers and outerwear were incorporated throughout using patchwork and appliqué, to add a layer of brightly coloured shapes onto the base canvas. These unique artworks include a BW numbered Jacron patch.
The wadding used inside the Hand Patchwork is made using recycled plastic bottles, and water-resistant deadstock fabric has been used for the underside. The eyelets are positioned in each corner, alike to the original flags, giving you the option to install as a wall hanging.
100% of the proceeds from this sale will be donated to the ‘Bethany Williams Benevolent Fund’ a fund created by The Magpie Project. The East London grassroots organisation is a charity that supports women and children who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
The installation at Coal Drops Yard saw 90 flags displayed, boasting illustrations inspired by collaborative story telling workshops led by Williams and artist Melissa Kitty Jaram conducted with the families from The Magpie Project and Making For Change. The workshops explored the beauty of folklore and storytelling between generations, spotlighting how certain themes and values shared can stay with you through life. Alongside the eight artworks, thirteen original flags are available as small pieces of the original Coal Drops Yard installation, sold to raise funds for The Magpie Project.
This artwork is number 4 of 8.
